Dr Thorley has been awarded degrees of Master of Philosophy in Clinical Psychology and  Doctor of Philosophy in Clinical Child Psychology (Institute of Psychiatry, University of London). He is an Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, a Chartered Psychologist a chartered scientist, a member of the UK Register of Expert Witnesses and a Law Society and Association of Personal Injury Lawyers approved Witness. He is registered with the Health Professions Council,

Dr Thorley been a Clinical Child Psychologist for approximately 30 years and Consultant and Head Child and Adolescent Psychologist for the Leicestershire and Rutland Healthcare Trust. He is now in private clinical practice at the Spire Hospital Leicester and Fitzwilliam Hospital Peterborough. He held a previous appointment of Honorary Principal Clinical Psychologist at the Hospital for Sick Children at Great Ormond Street  and was a research psychologist at the Institute of Child Health (University College, University of London).  Before that, for approximately 7 years he held research, teaching and clinical positions at the Maudsley Hospital and Institute of Psychiatry (University of London). He is recent a member of the clinical guidelines development group for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder at the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE).

He has produced  over 20 peer reviewed articles and book chapters on clinical child psychology. He is an expert on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder has and has further expertise in a wide range of mental health problems and disorders of childhood and adolescence including autistic spectrum disorders and the effects of brain injury.

Dr Thorley is an experienced professional witness and has been providing expert reports to the Court and solicitors for 12 years.  He has received specialist training in medico-legal report writing and the provision of evidence in Court. He is a Law Society Approved Witness and member of the UK Register of Expert Witnesses. He writes approximately 40 medico-legal reports for the Court each year - 60% the subject of joint instructions, 30% from solicitors acting for claimants and 10% from solicitors acting for defendants. He specialises in the psychological aspects of personal injury in clients up the the age of 18 years. Conditions  evaluated include Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Adjustment Disorder, Phobic Disorders, Depression and the effects of brain injury.

Dr Thorley has considerable experience in the treatment of clients  who have suffered  psychological injuries as the result of accidents and trauma utilising a number of treatment approaches including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT), Hypnosis and Guided Imagery.
